Boost Sales and Attract More Customers: A Google Business Profile Guide for Small Business Owners

December 3, 2024

Consumers will often read reviews before completing an online purchase. This is human nature, and we all do it. But, why do we need to read reviews?

It’s all because of social proof.

What is social proof?

Social proof is a psychological and social phenomenon where consumers make purchase decisions based on the actions and opinions of other consumers. This is also referred to as influenced purchase decisions.

How Social Proof Affects Small Business Growth

Social proof is influential for any business, but especially for small businesses. ReviewTrackers published a study in 2023 on consumer behavior.

The results are clear indicators of social proof:

  • 94% of consumers say an online review has convinced them to avoid a business.
  • 92% use reviews to guide most of their ordinary purchasing decisions.
  • 62% of consumers age 18 to 34 trust a brand because of good reviews and ratings.

Social proof can make or break growth. Positive feedback builds trust, drives word-of-mouth, and converts prospects into customers. Download our Essential Definitions for Small Business Owners If these terms feel unfamiliar. We’re here to help!

Simplify Social Proof With A Google Business Profile

A Google Business profile is a free and effective marketing tool. The platform can help your business:

  • Gain credibility
  • Attract new customers
  • Get discovered on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages)
  • Keep your customers informed
  • Get more traffic to your website

How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile

Setting up a Google Business account is easy and simple. Here are the steps:

  1. Use this link to sign up for a Google Business Account.
  2. Enter your business name and select the appropriate category.
  3. Add your location (you can use a PO Box with a street address if you don’t have a physical location).
  4. Fill in your contact details, including a phone number (Google Voice works well for this).

Once you complete these steps, you will need to verify your business. Verification is possible through phone, email, text, mail, or video. Wait times can occur.

For example, if you need to verify by mail, a postcard with a unique verification code will arrive at your business address within 14 days. You will enter this code in your Google Business account to confirm that your business is located at the listed address.

It may take time for your business to appear on the listing. Be patient and use Google Maps or Google Search for easier account management.
